Program notes
I remember visiting a series of rock sites with some sort of improvised museums in the Southern USA along the 66 Route. I was amazed at the marvel of crystalline structures formed inside otherwise dull stones when seen on the side of the road. As soon as a cut was made through, an entirely new world of shapes, forms and colors would arise to my endless amazement. Onyx was written in 2008 for bass clarinet in Bb and percussion. It is a musically transcribing the natural formation of this rock when presented as a transversal cut.
